The Slammers have a 9-4 record, a full game ahead of the defending champion Patriots. Led by foreign reinforcements Chris Kuete and Jason Dixon, the Slammers downed the Brunei Barracudas 72-65 on December 22. Kuete had 21 points while Dixon finished with a double double 18 points and 15 rebounds. Attaporn Lertmalaiporn also played well in their last game, tallying 10 points.

The Patriots are coming off back-to-back wins over the KL Dragons (73-71) and Singapore Slingers (81-73). Veteran point guard Egay Billones was the top performer against the Slingers, finishing with a game-high 21 points. Patriots head coach Louie Alas will also pin his hopes on American imports Gabe Freeman and Steve Thomas. Freeman scored 17 points in their last game while Thomas had 12 points and 14 rebounds.

It will be the third meeting between the Slammers and the Patriots this season. The Patriots beat the Slammers 54-48 in Round 4 but the Bangkok-based club retaliated with a 69-68 victory in Round 8.
