England ended the second day of the fifth and final Ashes Test on 167-3 in reply to Australia's 280 on Tuesday

Australia, who started the day on 134-4, had Mitchell Johnson to thank as his knock of 53 helped steer a recovery.

Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus put on 76 for the ninth wicket as the hosts ended on a respectable total and recovered from 189-8.

Johnson later in the day picked up the wickets of Jonathan Trott, who recorded his first duck in Test cricket, and Kevin Pietersen (36).

Andrew Strauss had earlier hit 60 from just 58 balls as England made a good start.

Cook, who will resume on 61, became the second youngest batsman behind Sachin Tendulkar, to score 5,000 runs in Test cricket.

England only need to avoid defeat in Sydney to win the series and Strauss' side will be looking to make a good start to day three to give them a good lead.
