Michael van Gerwen hit a nine-dart finish at the 2012 World Matchplay Darts on Wednesday night to beat Steve Beaton.

Van Gerwen's superb finish led to bookmakers slashing the odds on him winning the World Matchplay Darts title after the Dutchman recorded a 13-9 win over Beaton.

There was nothing between the pair during the opening exchanges, although Mighty Mike was on fire during the 9th leg, with the 23-year-old hitting a memorable finish that was thoroughly enjoyed in the commentary box by Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff amongst others.

Van Gerwen will pick up a £5,000 bonus for the nine-darter, as well as remaining in the hunt to claim the £100,000 first prize.

The youngster hit six ton-plus finishes in the game, with seven 180s helping him to finish with an end average of 104.36.

"The nine-darter was amazing," said van Gerwen.

"It means so much for me and I’m very happy - I exploded into the game after the nine-darter.

"It was a very good game and Steve played well too. To win the game with a 104 average and a nine-darter is brilliant."
