Hanson shot a seven under par round of 65 on Saturday - the best of the week so far - to move him from two under to nine under par.
Also in contention are 2010 Open champion Louis Oosthuizen at seven under par after three rounds, ahead of Americans Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar, and Hunter Mahan, who are well placed at six, five, and four under par respectively.
