The 2011 Formula One season gets underway this weekend with 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton confident about his chances

Reigning champion Sebastian Vettel is huge favourite to retain his title ahead of this weekend's Australian Grand Prix, with Red Bull even money favourites with the bookmakers to retain the constructors' championship.

It's Fernando Alonso who the bookies believe will give Vettel and Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber the most competition this year but Hamilton believes his McLaren car will be "ready for battle" this weekend despite problems in testing.

"I strongly believe that, while our preparations haven’t gone as smoothly as we’d have liked, we’ll be arriving in Melbourne with everything finally meshing together," he said. "That makes me really excited."

Despite being favourite, Vettel believes he needs to improve if he is to come top of the standings again at the end of 2011.

"We need to get better in every single area," said the world champion ahead of this weekend's season-opener. "Improving yourself never stops – it goes on for ever."

Ferrari star Alonso is also in confident mood.

"We have covered so many kilometres in testing and have shown that we have reached a good level of reliability, which is always important," he said. "There are reasons to be optimistic, even if we cannot really be sure where we are compared to the others."
