Sebastian Vettel cruised to victory in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix as he started the new Formula One season the same way he finished last year - with a win

F1's youngest ever world champion drove superbly as he took the chequered flag at Melbourne’s Albert Park without even a hint of an error being made.

It was in contrast to last year's race Down Under when Vettel was forced to retire whilst in the lead, with the 23-year-old this year taking maximum points after starting from pole.

The German was 22 seconds ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, who had damaged his car earlier in the race after running wide at turn one.

Vitaly Petrov finished on the podium for the first time in his Formula One career as he drove well for Renault.

On three-stop strategies, Fernando Alonso finished fourth for Ferrari, followed by Vettel's Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber in fifth.

Jenson Button was sixth in his McLaren, ahead of Sauber rookie Sergio Perez, who drove superbly to finished in seventh place, surprising critics of the new Pirelli tyres by stopping just one in the entire race.
