Formula One has lifted a ban on so-called "team orders" which caused controversy at the German Grand Prix earlier this year

The decision was announced by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) on Friday and will divide fans.

Earlier this year in Germany, Ferrari controversially used team orders to allow Fernando Alonso to win the race.

Ferrari were fined for their actions and although Friday's decision would allow them to do the same thing again next season, the FIA have warned that blatant action early in the season could still be punished.

A statement read: "Teams will be reminded that any actions liable to bring the sport into disrepute are dealt with under Article 151c of the International Sporting Code and any other relevant provisions."

Team communications during the race will be made available to broadcasters from the start of the 2012 F1 season.
