The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in second spot in the Western Conference standings and as the season winds down, the San Antonio Spurs, the top team in the west, appear to be well out of reach.
There are scenarios where Los Angeles could overtake San Antonio however with most teams approaching the 70 game point in the season and with Los Angeles seven games back of San Antonio catching the Spurs is not that realistic of a goal any longer.
The Lakers' challenge for the remainder of the regular season is to keep on top of the Dallas Mavericks in the standings so that LA would hold home court advantage against the Mavs in a possible second round match-up.
The Lakers are currently in the midst of a long home-stand, one that will end with Dallas coming to town at month's end.
