NBA Lockout Looming as Both Sides Still at Odds

Representatives for the owners and negotiators will meet on Thursday in a last ditch effort to avoid a lockout.

NBA.com reported on Wednesday that "Negotiators for NBA owners and players will meet Thursday in the final hours before the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement, perhaps needing to make significant progress to avoid a lockout."

The current CBA expires at the end of June with Thursday, the final day of the month, representing the last chance for a lockout to be avoided.

The NBA had a lockout in 1998/99 which led to the season being reduced to 50 games. That lockout lasted from July 1st, 1998 to January 20th, 1999.

Typically when lockouts, whether in the NBA or elsewhere in North American sports, take place the fan reaction is extremely negative, with perhaps the cancellation of the 1994 World Series being a major blow to the fan bases of Major League Baseball franchises.

More recently in North American sports the entire 2005 NHL season was cancelled as the players and owners were not able to see eye-to-eye.
