Ray Allen Trade Rumors

Crunch Sports Staff - 1 Feb 2010

Are the rumors just spread by Internet sports forum junkies or do they hold water?

NBA betting trends have been disfavoring the Boston Celtics lately (all stats BetUS).

They’re a horrific 3-7 SU in their last 10 road games and just 2-6 SU in their last 8 games overall.  Although it is hard to imagine, against the spread the picture is even worse as the Celts are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8.

The problems in Boston have led to rumors swirling that a breakup of the vaunted Boston Three Party is imminent.

Ray Allen, who allowed Kobe Bryant to drain a game winning shot the other night while failing to produce a clutch shot of his own, has been thrown into the mix as a possible trade candidate.  While Ray Ray had been used in trade rumors only by Internet junkies and forum posters now those talks look like they’re beginning to sing a different tune.

The truth is that Ray Allen is one of the best pure shooters in the league’s history, and while he was integral to the two playoff runs by the Celtics, Boston is panicking like crazy. The crazy thing is that Ray Allen isn’t the problem in Boston – it’s Kevin Garnett’s knees that are slowing this team down to a crawl. Clearing cap space and making bold moves for mercenary players didn’t seem like a part of the plan in Boston, but now it may be part of a championship formula as Boston sees the clock ticking on the NBA regular season.

The Celtics are well aware of how valuable Garnett is to the franchise.  The city and the team entertaining wild ideas about a KG-Amar’e Stoudemire or KG-Bosh trade just seem insane, if not incredibly difficult. It would be fun to engage those ideas, but they’re just not happening.

The Celtics take on the Wizards tonight and they are -5.5 road favorites, -235 on the moneyline.
