Kansas Jayhawks Crushing Midwest Region's Odds

Crunch Sports Staff - 16 Mar 2010

Kansas have odds on the shorter side of EVEN to advance to the Final Four.

Sportsbook.com have opened up their futures market betting lines for the Final Four and the Kansas Jayhawks have come in with very short odds.  Here are the updated odds to win the Midwest Region and to advance to the Final Four for NCAA basketball:

Kansas  -200
Ohio State  +350
Georgetown  +600
Maryland  +1000

Michigan State  +1000
Tennessee  +2500
Oklahoma State  +5000
Georgia Tech  +5000

UNLV  +6000
San Diego State  +6000
Northern Iowa  +10000
Ohio  +30000

New Mexico State  +50000
Houston  +50000
UC Santa Barbara  +100000
Lehigh  +100000

Kansas have come in at -200 (1/2) even though this bracket runs at least 3 deep, if not 4 deep, in Final Four threats.  Kansas are clearly the favorite as they have been the top team in the nation for significant parts of the year however with Ohio State, Georgetown, and Maryland in the mix, Kansas's true odds might be judged to be closer to EVEN.

The biggest threat to Kansas is Ohio State, the two seed in the Midwest Region, who are fresh off of their near 30 point drubbing of Minnesota in the Big Ten championship game.  Ohio State have Evan Turner, the best player in college basketball this year, but the Buckeyes also have very capable threats behind Turner.  William Buford, Jon Diebler, and David Lighty are all averaging double digits in scoring this season and should Kansas meet Ohio State in the Regional Finals, that would promise to be the best game before the Final Four.

Kansas can matchup with Ohio State but with the odds the way they are you better go with Ohio State in this region.  While it would be shocking to see Kansas fall before the Regional Finals it would not be so shocking to see them lose to Ohio State in those Finals.  +350 on Evan Turner and his team looks a lot better than -200 on Kansas at this point and our recommendation is to sprinkle the Buckeyes.

Farther down the list, the only longshot that you might take a swipe at is Georgia Tech.  They made the ACC final, shoulda-coulda-woulda won against Duke, and are priced at +5000 to make the Final Four.  They might be judged to be more like +3750 longshots and that means there is some value to their odds at +5000.
