Former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh could not hide his delight at landing the position of head coach for the San Francisco 49ers and insists he can't wait "to start building a team" capable of success in the NFL.

Ex-quarterback Harbaugh was a first-round pick for the Chicago Bears back in 1987 and also featured for the Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens and San Diego Chargers.

After coaching San Diego University for three years, he spent four with Stanford University and took that team to a 12-1 record this season.

The 47-year-old has reportedly signed a five-year deal with the 49ers worth $25million despite the possibility of more lucrative offers from the Miami Dolphins or his former college side Michigan.

Harbaugh told ESPN: "It's the perfect competitive opportunity for me and the rest of the San Francisco organisation to be a part of a team that has a chance to win.

"I'm excited about the 49ers, one of the legendary franchises in all of football. I'm excited to meet the players, I can't wait to be around those guys - those professionals, those strong men, those leaders and start building a team."

The news was well received by 49ers players, with Patrick Willis welcoming the new coach via his Twitter account.
