2011 Stanley Cup Futures - Edmonton Oilers are the longest longshots

Crunch Sports Staff - 16 Jul 2010

No Canadian team has won Lord Stanley's Cup in nearly 2 decades.

While Canadian players often bring the Stanley Cup to their home town ever since 1993 they have only done so as part of an American club.  It is a well known fact that Canadian clubs are on a drought although perhaps the streak of Cup-less years for Canadian clubs is a little artificial due to the fact that Canadian clubs are well outnumbered by American clubs in the NHL.

Also, it should be pointed out that the Calgary Flames appeared to score a crucial goal late in game 6 of the 2004 finals, a goal that would have given them an enormous edge to win the Cup.  However, in a controversial move the goal was not allowed and the Cup drought continued.

It doesn't look like the Cup will be heading north in 2011 either as Canadian based teams are priced no shorter than +1700 (17/1) in the outright winner's market.

Here are the current odds for all the Canadian based teams:

1. Vancouver Canucks +1700 Bwin
2. Montreal Canadiens +3300 Stan James
3. Calgary Flames +3600 Stan James
4. Ottawa Senators +4000 BetFred
5. Toronto Maple Leafs +6600 Boylesports
6. Edmonton Oilers +10000 Boylesports

When betting during the off-season the smartest thing that you can do is have a bankroll ready and pounce on odds as soon as key transactions are made.  When a team signs a key player sometimes you can get your bet in BEFORE the odds are adjusted.

For betting right now, 8.5 to 1 with Bwin is a good price on the Pittsburgh Penguins and that is our recommendation.
