Toronto Maple Leafs to Sign Brad Richards?

The Leafs are expected to make a push for Richards when free agency starts on July 1st at noon ET.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were in the bottom half of the NHL at the end of the 2010/11 regular season however they did at least flirt with making the playoffs until the very late stages of the season.

But after several years of missing the post-season altogether there is no such thing as "close enough" in Toronto anymore and Leaf fans will be hoping for a better 2011/12 campaign.

Free agency starts on Friday July 1st and the Leafs are expected to pursue Brad Richards:

"Brian Burke will make a strong push for Brad Richards, but if he doesn't get him, here's guessing he focuses on re-signing his restricted free agents and looking for a trade." (from NHL.com)

Richards, 31 years old, spent the last four seasons with the Dallas Stars and he was a player who was often named in trade rumors nearing the trade deadline in the recently completed season.

A center, Richards had 77 points in 72 games during 2010/11 and at his best he is definitely an impact player who won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay back in 2004.
