The Horse Guards Parade Ground is the setting for the Beach Volleyball tournament at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Beach volleyball is popular in Australia and in the US states of California and Florida, and the two countries are among just three to have won Olympic gold since the sport made its Games debut in Atlanta in 1996.

The third is Brazil.

In between games of the Women's Beach Volleyball, the London Olympic organizers have laid on cheerleaders to keep the crowds entertained (see pictures above).

Saturday saw a huge shock in the competition, with Russia stunning second seeds China in Pool B.

Xue Chen and Zhang Xi, bronze medallists four years ago, lost their opening match to Anastasia Vasina and Anna Vozakova, 18-21 21-14 16-14.

China will next face Switzerland on Monday, and Zhang admitted improvements are required before that crucial contest.

"I did not feel right before the game and maybe our preparation was not right," she said after the defeat.

"We must focus next time. The Russians played really great and there's been lots of pressure on us and we made lots of mistakes."
