Great Britain's Rebecca Adlington finished third to seal the bronze medal in the women's 400m freestyle at the Olympic Games on Sunday evening.

Adlington took bronze from lane eight as France's Camille Muffat won gold.

The 23-year-old was out of the medal places for most of the race, but stormed back in the final 80m to take Team GB's first swimming medal of the Games.

Allison Schmitt of the USA finished behind Muffat to win the silver medal.

"The crowd was so overwhelming. Twelve years' hard work has gone into that," Adlington told BBC Sport afterwards.

"Four hundred metres always feel so hard for me and they were so far ahead.

"I'm so glad I've got a medal at a home Games. Not many people can say that."
