Canada vs Russia Final Score - Wednesday's WJHC Gold Medal Game

Canada leads 3-0: famous last words.

Canada and Russia met in the final of the 2010/11 World Juniors Hockey Championship on Wednesday January 5th and the Canadians entered as a noted favorite to win. After storming through the first two periods to take a 3-0 lead there was little to suggest anything except for Canadian gold however the third period can only be described as one thing: shocking.

Overconfidence is one of the biggest lead killers in hockey as it puts teams back on their heels. The Canadians did not play with any sense of urgency in the third period and Russia, who knew they could still win, stormed back to take the gold medal away from Canada with 5 unanswered goals and the final score ended at 5-3 for Russia.

Igor Bobkov, who did not even start the game in net for Russia, took away the player of the game honors as his relief in net gave Russia the stability that they needed.

Everyone takes their lumps and Canadian hockey took a big one as the juniors choked big time in front of a packed pro-Canadian arena in Buffalo, just south of Ontario, Canada. The loss represents the second consecutive finals loss for the Canadians who had beaten Russia 6-3 in their previous meeting over a week ago at the Championship.
