North Americans waking up for the day will soon be shocked with some bad news, especially those who have relatives living in Japan.

That country has been rocked by a massive 8.9 earthquake, one that has triggered a tsunami that has affected the country with the entire Pacific rim currently on watch, including the Canadian and American western coasts.

The earthquake is the largest in Japan's recorded history and one of the largest on a global scale in recent decades.

The Canadian Press have reported that sporting events are being cancelled as Japan focuses on dealing with the disaster:

"The J-League announced that 19 matches in the national football competition had been postponed, while baseball matches in Tokyo, Chiba and Yokohama have been cancelled."
