Chelsea FC boss AVB insists he has 'unconditional' support

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has claimed he is "unconditionally" backed by owner Roman Abramovich after seeing his side held at home to Birmingham on Saturday.

Chelsea struggled to a 1-1 draw against the Championship side in their FA Cup 5th round tie at Stamford Bridge, with Daniel Sturridge's second half goal keeping the Blues in the competition.

And although Villas-Boas admitted the result was not acceptable, he was keen to praise his players for how they responded to going a goal down.

"It's a poor result of course but an excellent performance in the second half, the team was willing to try and find the ball," he told ESPN.

"1-1 is not to be expected but it gives us another chance at Birmingham to pick up a win and try to win the trophy."

And when asked if his position as manager was based on results, the former Porto coach insisted: "No, it's unconditional."

Villas-Boas hauled Fernando Torres off at half-time after another disappointing performances (see below), but AVB believes the £50million forward can still come good.

"Fernando has been in good form," insisted the Portuguese, despite replacing him with Didier Drogba after 45 minutes.

"He is looking for the goal which will give him extra motivation and when he gets that he will be a different player, for sure."

Villas-Boas was also asked about last weekend's team meeting, which according to reports in British newspapers this week resulted in his tactics being criticised by some of his players.

"I think it helped," he insisted. "They showed more ambition and desire.

"We played against a team with the same ambition and desire, and I think Birmingham matched us well, and they were inspired to get the draw."
