UEFA warn Arsenal FC midfielder Jack Wilshere over Twitter betting comments

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been warned by UEFA after breaking betting regulations.

Wilshere, who is still recovering from a knee injury that ruled him out for most of last season, was given a slap on the wrists for comments made on Twitter last year.

Last December, the England international had tweeted that Emmanuel Frimpong was "worth a cheeky £10" to open the scoring at odds of 150/1 during Arsenal's Champions League tie with Olympiakos.

Wilshere, who was not involved in the game, later said on the social networking website "Frimmy nearly won me some money there!" after Frimpong had gone close with the score still goalless.

Both tweets were later deleted.

UEFA do not allow players to bet on their own team and breaching betting rules can lead to a large fine and even a ban.

A UEFA spokesman said: "The player has been warned for being in breach of the principles of integrity of matches and competitions.

"The disciplinary measure was a warning."
