Tottenham to go head-to-head with Arsenal FC in race to sign Jan Vertonghen

Tottenham are set to go head-to-head with rivals Arsenal in the race to sign Jan Vertonghen after opening talks with the Ajax defender.

Vertonghen is out of contract in June 2013 and is almost certain to leave Ajax at the end of the season, with the likes of Juventus, Manchester United, and Newcastle also showing interest.

Vertonghen last month claimed no fewer than ten clubs were showing interest in signing him, with Arsenal known to be keen on making him their next new signing after completing a deal for FC Koln striker Lukas Podolski earlier this week.

But according to the Daily Mail citing reports in Holland, Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is keen to wrap up a deal for the centre-back at the end of the season.

Ajax coach Frank de Boer recently admitted that the highly-rated Belgium international was ready to join a bigger club.

"He is ready", said De Boer.

"I think that Jan has been playing incredibly well in recent months.

"If he leaves now, then I would find that completely normal.

"It was not the case before, but he has crossed a plateau. Not only on the pitch, but off it too.

"This development is something that it is very pleasing to see."
