Arsenal FC join race to sign Luke Shaw - report

Arsenal are reportedly ready to battle Chelsea in the race to sign Southampton defender Luke Shaw.

Shaw only made one first-team appearance for the newly-promoted Premier League side last season, but has been linked with a number of top flight clubs.

Chelsea have been keen on the 17-year-old for some time, while Premier League champions Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham have all shown interest in the left-back, who made his first-team debut in the FA Cup at Millwall last season.

But according to the Sunday Mirror, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had scouts in attendance to watch Shaw come off the bench and play in the pre-season friendly at home to Ajax at the weekend.

The teenager played the last 25 minutes of the game at St Mary's, which the Dutch side won 1-0.

Earlier this month it was reported that Chelsea were leading the race to sign Shaw in a £4million deal, but manager Nigel Adkins insisted he has no intention of selling the promising youngster.

"Luke Shaw is a big part of our future plans," he told the Daily Star.

"We have got no intention, believe you me, of letting any of our young players move on.

"We want them in the first team in the Premier League, playing for Southampton Football Club."
