Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal FC contract talks have not taken place

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists he has not held talks with the club about a new contract.

Wenger had on Thursday morning come in for praise from Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, who had said: "It's not a sense of sentimentalism, not a reward for services, it's a belief that we have an incredible manager who loves this club and is the best man to lead us forward.

"We're really confident about the direction that the club is heading. I feel he can keep going for a long time. He's in fantastic shape and he's as driven as he's ever been and excited as ever" (see Related Articles for more).

But Wenger has played down talk about being handed an extension at Emirates Stadium.

"I'm an Arsenal man and I have always shown that," the Frenchman told reporters on Thursday.

"Two years is a long time in my job. My target is to do as well as I can for this Club. How long will it last? I don't know. We have potential.

"In the past I have shown my commitment to this club and at the moment I am not in the mood to think about the long-term future as we want to do well this season."

When asked if talks had taken place about a new deal, Wenger replied: "No."
