Arsenal FC want Robert Lewandowski to replace Robin van Persie - report

Arsenal are reportedly considering a bid for Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski as a replacement for Robin van Persie.

Van Persie is out of contract at the end of next season and on Wednesday announced he does not plan to sign a new deal at Emirates Stadium, which is set to spark a £25million battle to secure his services this summer.

Although manager Arsene Wenger has brought in Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud this summer, Van Persie's bombshell will leave the Gunners lacking options in attack should they opt to cash in on their captain during this transfer window rather than risk losing him for free in twelve months time.

And according to the Daily Mail, Lewandowski is on their radar as well as Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic, who has also been linked with Chelsea.

Lewandowski was linked with a move to the Premier League last month. During Euro 2012, the Poland international's coach, Franciszek Smuda, had hinted that a move to Manchester United was on the cards.

Lewandowski later dodged questions about a move to England after Smuda had told reporters: "'Lewy' is going to Manchester United, Kuba [Blaszczykowski] also somewhere in England, [Lukasz] Piszczek to Real [Madrid].

"They have a goal and they want to grow. I base the squad on them."

Lewandowski, who has two years left on his existing deal with Dortmund, had recently said he believed it would be hard to accomplish anything else with the club.
