Tottenham offered Benayoun as makeweight in Chelsea FC's Modric bid - report

Chelsea are still reportedly determined to sign Luka Modric from Tottenham before next week's transfer deadline.

Chelsea have been trying to convince Spurs to sell Modric throughout the summer and have already failed with bids of £22million and £27m.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp on Tuesday claimed chairman Daniel Levy would look at Modric's contract "in a month or two" to try and better his current £55,000-a-week wage.

But despite splashing out around £23m on Valencia midfielder Juan Mata this week, Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas remains keen on signing Modric and according to the Daily Star is ready to offer Yossi Benayoun to Redknapp as a makeweight in the deal.

Redknapp on Monday had warned that he could field 25-year-old Modric against Hearts this week in the Europa League - a move which would make him ineligible to play for another club in Europe this season and likely lead to Chelsea's interest cooling.

And the Spurs boss believes the Croatia international will still be at White Hart Lane when the transfer window closes next week.

But with Redknapp keen on signing Benayoun and looking to strengthen his own midfield, he may well be tempted to finally cash in.

Redknapp has also been linked with a move for Liverpool playmaker Joe Cole (see below).
