England's hopes for Euro 2012 were given a boost on Friday morning after UEFA's disciplinary panel accepted Wayne Rooney's appeal against his three-match international ban – reducing it to two games.

Rooney had been given a three-match ban following his sending off against Montenegro, ruling him out of the group stages of next summer's European Championships in Poland and Ukraine.

The Manchester United striker was given a red card for kicking Miodrag Dzudovic during October's 2-2 draw in Podgorica.

Rooney, England manager Fabio Capello and a four-strong team of lawyers attended Friday's hearing at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon where they looked to have the ban reduced, arguing that the length of the ban was not proportionate to the offence.

The Football Association's legal team had also pointed to the fact that Dzudovic had asked UEFA to show leniency because the former Everton striker had acted out of "desperation rather than anger" and had also been "provoked by problems his family had to face a short time before the game."

The arguments were accepted by UEFA's three-man panel, with the outcome meaning Rooney will now miss only the Three Lions' group matches against France and Sweden.
