Carles Puyol to be offered new FC Barcelona contract

Barcelona are ready to offer 34-year-old captain Carles Puyol a new long-term contract.

And Puyol, who has been at Camp Nou since he was a teenager and made his first-team debut in October 1999, insists he has no plans to retire.

"I want to keep playing football until the age of 40," said the centre-back.

Reports in Spain over the past 24 hours have suggested the Catalans have already opened talks with Puyol about a new deal.

And Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta admits that despite his age, special circumstances apply to the influential Spaniard.

"The situation of Carles is special because it is not a simple deal," said Zubizarreta.

"For us he is a symbol in the club and merits different treatment.

"Barcelona will not be hasty on this subject but we are totally certain that we want Puyol at our club forever."
