Roberto Di Matteo insists Daniel Sturridge has role at Chelsea FC

Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge, who has been linked with a number of clubs including Liverpool and Tottenham, has been backed to play a big role at Stamford Bridge this season.

Sturridge has been linked with a move away from Chelsea for some time after becoming increasingly frustrated last season. After being played in a wide role under Andre Villas-Boas, who was sacked as Blues boss at the start of March, he fell completely out of favour in the closing stages of the season under Roberto Di Matteo.

Sturridge last month said he was hoping to be given the opportunity to play in his preferred central role should he still be a Chelsea player when the summer transfer window closes.

And Di Matteo believes the 22-year-old has a part to play.

"He is part of the squad, of the team, and still has a lot to give," he told the club's official website.

"He still has a lot to learn as well but we are hopeful he can develop even more and become a great player for us.

"He did very well to recover from his illness in a short period of time. He is a very exciting player and it's great for him to be involved in the England squad.

"He has the ability to play in more than one position. He made it quite public he likes to play as a number nine but there is competition, which is good, and we will see as the season starts who is going to play."

Sturridge has also been linked with Arsenal as well as former club Manchester City.
