Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that he could make one more signing before the transfer window closes - with Everton defender Leighton Baines on his radar.
Ferguson on Friday completed the signing of Robin van Persie from Arsenal in a £24million deal and has already brought in Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell.
But the United boss has hinted that he is ready to bring in one more player in "one other position".
The Scot earlier this summer admitted he was keen on bringing in a left-back to provide competition for Patrice Evra, and although Swansea full-back Neil Taylor and Lyon's Aly Cissokho have been linked with moves to Old Trafford, as reported by Crunchsports.com last month, Baines is still believed to be his top target - providing a fee can be agreed with Everton.
"I think that is maybe it [in terms of signings this summer]," Ferguson told MUTV.
"Maybe in one other position.
"We have spent a big amount of money and, if I need to go to the owners, I am sure they would say 'yes'. But it's only if a certain player would become available."
Ferguson, who has allowed young left-back Fabio to go out on loan this season, had last week told reporters that his summer spending was over unless "a certain player came available" in "one more position".
It is believed United have been waiting for Everton to lower their asking price for Baines, 27, before making a move.
Everton want in the region of £17m for the England international, and although they are ready to offer him an improved contract to keep him on Merseyside, they are also aware that cashing in would help to ease their financial woes, although the recent sale of Jack Rodwell to Manchester City has made things slightly easier.
United are thought to value Baines at around £12m.
