Man Utd confirm they have made bid to sign Robin van Persie

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed the club have made a bid for Arsenal captain Robin van Persie.

United, along with rivals Manchester City, and Italian champions Juventus, have been widely seen as frontrunners in the race to sign Van Persie for some time after the Dutchman, who is out of contract at the end of next season, recently announced he does not plan to sign a new deal at Emirates Stadium.

All three are believed to have tabled bids in the region of £15million for the 28-year-old over the past 24 hours, while newspaper reports on Thursday morning suggested United were confident of winning the race to sign Van Persie.

Ferguson has confirmed the Red Devils have made an offer, but acknowledges there is stiff competition in the race to sign the Netherlands international.

"Obviously Arsenal have given out the fact that we've made a bid for him," he told MUTV.

"We try to keep business as close as possible to us until the moment we conclude a deal. There's no point talking about something that might not happen.

"There are other clubs interested in the player. We've shown an interest and that's where we're at at the moment."

Everton defender Leighton Baines and Sao Paulo midfielder Lucas Moura are also on Ferguson's radar.

Arsenal are thought to be holding out for a fee in excess of £25m for the Dutchman, who has also been linked AC Milan, Barcelona, and Real Madrid.

Ferguson's comments led to bookmakers again slashing the odds on Van Persie moving to Old Trafford and on Friday evening he was odds-on favourite with Sky Bet to join United before the end of the summer transfer window, ahead of Man City, and Juventus.
