Roberto Martinez: Man Utd striker Robin van Persie is 'phenomenal'

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has admitted he is surprised by how fast Robin van Persie has settled in at Manchester United.

Van Persie joined United last month in a £24million move from Arsenal and has scored four goals in three games for his new club, including a hat-trick against Southampton.

Wigan take on the Red Devils this weekend in the Premier League and Martinez believes the 29-year-old is at a level that few others can reach.

"We all know what level Robin van Persie is at. What he did with Arsenal - not many players can reach that level," Martinez told The Wigan Observer.

"Obviously he went to Manchester United, and you're expecting him to take a little bit of time to settle in. But he proves everyone wrong with a phenomenal display against Southampton."

Van Persie suffered a thigh injury while on international duty with the Netherlands on Tuesday night (see Related Articles).
