Manchester United are reportedly preparing to launch a bid for Leighton Baines as they look to wrap up their summer spending following the signing of Robin van Persie.
Van Persie completed his £24million move to Old Trafford on Friday, joining United from Arsenal and signing a four-year deal.
But United boss Sir Alex Ferguson recently confirmed he wants to sign a new left-back to provide cover and competition for Patrice Evra, and it is thought the signing of Van Persie will not prevent him from strengthening his back four.
Ferguson has been linked with Swansea full-back Neil Taylor and Lyon's Aly Cissokho, but as reported by Crunchsports.com last month, Baines is still believed to be the Scot's top target - providing a fee can be agreed.
And although the Red Devils are yet to table a bid for Baines, according to ESPN, Ferguson is preparing to make his move for the 27-year-old.
Ferguson, who has allowed young defender Fabio to go out on loan this season, told reporters on Friday that his summer spending was over unless "a certain player came available" in "one more position".
According to Friday's report, that player is Baines.
It is believed the club have been waiting for the Toffees to lower their asking price before making a move.
Everton want in the region of £17m for the England international, and although they are ready to offer him an improved contract to keep him on Merseyside, they are also aware that cashing in would help to ease their financial woes, although the recent sale of Jack Rodwell to Manchester City has made things slightly easier.
United are thought to value Baines at around £12m.
