Man Utd frontrunners in the race to sign Nathaniel Clyne - report

Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to sign Crystal Palace defender Nathaniel Clyne.

The 20-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is believed to be keen on a move away from the club in order to join a Premier League side.

Everton and Fulham have shown interest in the England Under-21 international, but according to Goal.com, reigning Premier League champions Man Utd are considering launching a £3million bid this month.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is said to have been impressed by Clyne’s display in Palace's shock Carling Cup win at Old Trafford last November, while injuries to several of his defenders are believed to have led to the Scot considering swooping for the highly-rated youngster before the January transfer window closes.

Palace chairman Steve Parish has admitted that he is struggling to convince Clyne to sign a new deal at the club, suggesting that his agent has already made contact with Premier League clubs.

Parish told the London Evening Standard: "Nathaniel won't sign a new contract. I have offered him a very lucrative one and I can't force him to accept it.

"His agent has got Nathaniel running his contract down - make your own mind up about what's happening."

If Clyne was to move at the end of the season when his contract expires, Palace would be entitled to compensation because he is aged under 24 and was developed by their youth system.
