Steve McClaren is ready to quit as Nottingham Forest manager after only five League matches in charge of the nPower Championship outfit.

The former England and Middlesbrough boss is thought to be just days away from making a decision about his future at the City Ground and is prepared to walk away from the job in a bid to protect his reputation.

McClaren is unhappy that the club have not backed him in the transfer market over the summer, while the likes of West Ham and Leicester - who like Forest were widely tipped for promotion pre-season - have brought in new faces.

The 50-year-old has spent the past few days at home with his family in the North East to consider whether or not to quit his role, and it is thought that Forest's willingness to let McClaren enter the emergency loan market could ultimately help him reach a decision.

A Forest source told the Daily Mail: "Steve came here in the hope of taking Forest up and was working on that basis.

"But he has always said that the squad needed bolstering in order to do that. He is disappointed and frustrated at the lack of further additions.

"He thinks he is short of what is required to lead the club to promotion.

"He's upset and is going away for a few days to think about things at the club."

Forest brought in Jonathan Greening and Ishmael Miller during the summer for a combined £2million, while Andy Reid, George Boateng and Matt Derbyshire all joined the club on free transfers.

But nine players have left the club over the summer and McClaren has had to deal with Forest's transfer acquisitions panel - which has always been unpopular with managers at the club - while seeing rivals clubs spend more money.
