Second seed Gael Monfils takes on last year's runner-up Jarkko Nieminen today in the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open.

Monfils is chasing a spot at the ATP World Tour Finals for the first time, and he is currently fourteenth in the standings. The Frenchman has some serious catching up to do and that means he needs to go far this week.

But he had a tough second round test, needing to save five out of six break points to sink Colombia's Santiago Giraldo 6-4 4-6 6-1.

It was not the best of starts from Monfils, who reached the semi-finals of this event three years ago. But he said afterwards that he did not expect it to be straightforward.

"I expected a tough match," Monfils said.

"Even after I lost the second set, I felt I was moving better and hitting my groundstrokes well, so I was positive that I could do well in the third set."

Nieminen has a fine record at this event, and despite an indifferent season so far he rose to the occasion on Wednesday, stunning seventh seed Robin Haase 7-6 7-6.

It will be a tricky one for Monfils but look for him to progress again.

Prediction: Monfils in three.
