German veteran Tommy Haas takes on Martin Klizan this afternoon in the first round of the bet-at-home Open in Hamburg (13:30 BST start).

Born in Hamburg, Haas grew up watching the very best in the world compete in this event when it still had Masters Series status. He's played the tournament numerous times himself over the years, but has never quite managed to challenge for the title.

Haas was rather disappointed with his early exit in Stuttgart last week, crashing out to world No. 206 Pavol Cervenak in straight sets in the second round. However Cervenak was playing well above his ranking last week and he even gave eventual finalist Juan Monaco quite a tussle in the quarter-finals.

Haas is again a wildcard entry into the draw this week having initially missed the entry list cut. However, he isn't seeded and if he gets past Klizan he'll face second seed and defending champion Gilles Simon in round two.

Klizan has yet to really achieve anything big on the main tour but he's forced his way up to a ranking of 59 by relentlessly winning challenger titles. He already has three to his name this season. However it's one thing mopping up at that level and quite another reproducing that success in ATP events and Klizan hasn't come close to the latter yet. He made a second round exit at the Croatia Open last week.

Prediction: Haas in two.
