Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka take on Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione in Saturday's Davis Cup doubles, looking to put Switzerland ahead in the tie.

The opening day of this World Group playoff tie ended 1-1 after Bernard Tomic recorded a superb win, before Roger Federer rescued the situation for the Swiss with a four set win over Lleyton Hewitt.

Going into the opening day, all the questions were about Tomic's fitness, but it was actually Wawrinka who struggled with a leg injury and the Swiss may have to replace him with other Stephane Bohli or Marco Chiudinelli.

It's a major blow for them as he looks unlikely to be fit enough to play two best of five sets matches over the next couple of days, meaning this doubles match is a must-win rubber.

Switzerland would love to field Wawrinka in the doubles as he and Federer are Olympic gold medallists and have that mutual on-court understand that comes from years of competing together. However, whatever the situation, Federer insisted that he's confident of winning three rubbers.

"I've always expected myself to win three matches," he said. "It was a big victory for me [over Hewitt].

"The first match on Sunday will be live now [against Tomic] and it's going to be interesting. There's a couple of areas there I will look to exploit."
