Serena Williams is favourite to win the women's singles gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics.

Certainties are rare when it comes to Olympic tennis, but it really is hard to see anyone touching Serena and Venus Williams in the doubles at London 2012.

They won gold together in Sydney 12 years ago and did it again in Beijing. And on the grass of Wimbledon, the duo simply reign supreme, with most of the girls finding it hard to get close on their service games.

They won yet another Wimbledon title together at a canter earlier this summer.

The singles is a tougher one to predict, but having never won Olympic gold on her own before, Serena will be very hungry to finally erase that blemish on her copybook. Having just won her fifth Wimbledon title - and in doing so, beating some of her main rivals for gold - she'll never have a better chance.

"It’s exciting to be back here so soon," Serena told reporters on Wednesday.

"Usually we have to wait 12 months to walk back on Centre Court and feel that moment that we felt. For me I’m really excited to have such a quick turnaround and get back on the grass where I love to play."

"Growing up as tennis players we always dreamed of winning Grand Slams and doing well at tournaments like Wimbledon, but to have an opportunity to win a gold medal and be mentioned among the great athletes, it’s an honour.

"Of all the tournaments I’ve won, I’ve probably enjoyed my gold medal the most."
