Olympic Tennis - Petra Kvitova vs. Shuai Peng (14:30 BST)

Petra Kvitova takes on Shuai Peng this afternoon in the second round of the women's singles at the London 2012 Olympic Games (14:30 BST start).

We nearly witnessed a big shock at the Olympic tennis competition on Saturday as 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova came close to falling at the first hurdle against Ukrainian outsider Kateryna Bondarenko.

It’s clear that all the players are fired up about the opportunity to represent their nation at the Olympics, and even the best grass court players will be in for some tough early matches at the All-England Club.

Having recorded a narrow 6-4 5-7 6-4 victory, the sixth seed can now look forward to a meeting with China’s Shuai Peng, who also endured a stern test in round one, as Hsieh Su-Wei pushed her deep into three sets.

After two hours and 31 minutes, Peng was eventually able to clinch a dramatic 6-3 6-7 7-5 win.

This will be the first ever competitive meeting between Kvitova and Peng, and it promises to be an exciting one. Kvitova will need to put her nervy first round outing behind her, and if she can, she’ll be in control here.

Given that Peng has a pretty disappointing 13-14 match record for 2012 heading into this tie, it seems unlikely that she’ll be able to oust Kvitova on the grassy lawns at SW19.

Prediction: Kvitova in three.
