Roger Federer Toys With Murray's Mind

Crunch Sports Staff - 31 Jan 2010

There's more pressure on Murray to win than Federer in the Australian Open final.

Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro all won their first Grand Slam title at a younger age than what Andy Murray is right now, something that has raised a lot of eyebrows in the tennis world.

Roger Federer seems to be all too happy to deflect pressure away from himself and to put it towards the British star as slam-less Murray clearly has more to prove now, than Federer ever will.

Roger Federer:  "I think he really needs it more than I do, so I think the pressure's big on him...we'll see how he's going to handle it. It's not going to be easy for him, that's for sure."

Murray has been trying to spin his defeat to Federer in the 2008 US Open final to his advantage saying that he learnt a lot from it.

However Federer was quick to get in a reposte to that, saying "Now that he didn't win the first one, I think doesn't help for the second one around. Plus he's playing me, who's won many Grand Slams prior to that, been able to win here three times so I know what it takes and how to do it, which is definitely an advantage."

Federer has been edgy in the past about his losing record against Murray and the Swiss also tried to dumb down the importance of several of those losses.

“Without taking anything away from him, I think a few times he played me I wasn't at my very, very best.” he said. "So I think the head-to-head could be quite different. That's why I don't really care too much about how the head-to-head stands. Every match is played differently. Best-of-five set matches are very different anyway."
