John Isner takes on Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber this afternoon in the third round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto (18:00 BST start).

Isner is making his debut in Toronto this week having competed in Montreal twice in the past. He came through a tight first round match with Pablo Andujar, 7-6, 7-5. It couldn't have been much closer, with Andujar eventually cracking at 5-5 in the second set, double-faulting to concede the break before the American closed out the match with three straight aces.

Kohlschreiber enjoyed a far more straightforward 6-2 6-2 win over Italy's Fabio Fognini. The German broke into the world's top 20 for the first time last month on the back of his Wimbledon quarter-final showing and a run to the Kitzbuhel final.

Kohlschreiber's best results always come on grass and clay, but he's never enjoyed the same degree of success on hard courts so it's hard to see him reaching the last eight.

Isner leads 2-0 on the head-to-head though both matches have been close three setters. The last encounter was a 2-6 7-6 6-2 win to Isner in Rome earlier this year which doesn't bode well for Kohlschreiber for if Isner can beat him on clay - his least favourite surface, then he'll surely beat him on hard courts.

Prediction: Isner in two.
