Sam Stosur takes on Lucie Safarova this afternoon in the third round of the Rogers Cup in Montreal (17:00 BST start).

As the reigning US Open champion, Stosur can expect a lot of attention over the next few weeks. However it's been a torrid year for the Australian and definitely not what she was hoping for after winning the first Grand Slam of her career nearly twelve months ago.

She fought back from 5-1 down in her second round clash with Simona Halep and was leading 7-5 4-4 when the Romanian retired with a left thigh injury. It was her first win on hard courts since March, and 16th seed Safarova could have a decent chance of pulling off the upset later today.

Stosur was a break down in both sets against Halep and after early exits at the French Open, Wimbledon and the Olympics, she's struggling for both form and confidence at the moment.

Safarova looked more assured during her 6-4 6-4 win over former teenage star Sesil Karatantcheva, and although she also lost early at the Olympics to Britain's Laura Robson, the Czech is a dangerous, streaky player who's capable of pulling off big wins against the game's leading names.

Prediction: Safarova in three.
