Caroline Wozniacki takes on Irina-Camelia Begu tonight in the first round of the 2012 US Open (23:00 BST start).

Wozniacki is the eighth seed in this year’s US Open, in which she’ll be hoping to finally clinch a slam title. For once, the Dane isn’t considered to be one of the main contenders this year, but recent runs in New York have been encouraging for her, and after finishing as the runner-up in 2009, she reached the final four in back-to-back US Opens in 2010 and 2011.

Wozniacki’s first task at Flushing Meadows this week will be finding a way past Begu, who ranks just inside the top 100 following a fairly disappointing season. She’s lost in the first round of three of her last four slams, and has never been beyond round two in a major.

Wozniacki hasn’t won any tournaments this year but her performances haven’t been too bad. We can expect her to get through this match, provided that the right knee injury she sustained in the WTA New Haven Open last week doesn’t prove to be a problem.

Prediction: Wozniacki in two.
