The semi-finals of the women's singles at the 2012 US Open take place later today, with Maria Sharapova taking on Victoria Azarenka before Serena Williams faces Sara Errani.

It looks like tennis fans are in for two great matches today at Flushing Meadows.

In the first semi-final, top seed Azarenka will face third seed Sharapova, while in the second, fourth seed Williams meets 10th seed Sara Errani.

The battle between Azarenka and Sharapova promises to be a classic. The two players have traded places at the top of the rankings this season, and have been involved in an ongoing on-court rivalry.

Azarenka beat the Russian in the Australian Open final earlier this year, though Sharapova went some way towards making up for this in the WTA Stuttgart final.

Serena remains the tournament favourite, but she could be in for a stern test against Errani. The Italian was the runner-up in this year’s French Open and she’s played superbly throughout the year.

Still, Serena hasn’t lost a set yet at this competition and appears to be at her formidable best.
