Victoria Azarenka takes on Mona Barthel later today in the second round of the WTA Doha Open.Azarenka is taking the WTA by storm this year and has already managed to establish herself as the world No. 1, largely thanks to her maiden slam success at the Australian Open lsat month.
The Belarusian is yet to lose in 2012, and it looks like this could be an incredible season for her. She’s the top seed for this week’s WTA Doha Open, and will begin with a second round showdown against Mona Barthel.
Barthel, whilst not exactly matching Azarenka’s achievements, is also enjoying a superb start to the year. She’s comfortably reached the top fifty, and her 17-3 match record for 2012 will be the envy of many players in the WTA.
The young German may have struggled a little more than expected in round one against French qualifier Caroline Garcia (7-6 7-6), but it looks like she might be able to close in on the top ten.
This could be one of the most fascinating matches in this week’s tournament. Azarenka should be able to maintain her unbeaten streak, but Barthel will be a tricky opponent. Both players will be full of confidence right now, and this should contribute towards a great battle.
Prediction: Azarenka in three.
