Britain's Heather Watson takes on Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei later today as she looks to reach the quarter-finals of the Mercury Insurance Open (19:00 BST start).

It's been a brilliant month for Watson, who last month became the first British player in ten years to reach the third round of Wimbledon and in doing so, she's now the British No. 1.

She also claimed her first WTA title last week, winning the doubles in Stanford.

"Being British No.1 has always been one of my goals, in singles and doubles. I'm glad I've achieved it now," said Watson earlier this week.

"I just want to keep climbing the rankings now. Set new goals, reach new targets and just keep improving."

She made a confident start to her WTA Carlsbad campaign, easing past Eleni Daniilidou 6-3 6-3 in the first round on Tuesday. She would have been expecting to face fifth seed Yanina Wickmayer today, but the Belgian had to retire in her clash with qualifier Chan.

Watson is on a roll at the moment, but Chan is a counter-puncher in a very similar mould so this one could well be a war of attrition which lasts a long time, and there's a decent chance this could go the distance.

Prediction: Watson in three.
