Marion Bartoli takes on Christina McHale tonight in the quarter-finals of the Mercury Insurance Open (04:00 BST start).

The headline game of the day on Stadium Court at the WTA Carlsbad is tonight's showdown between top seed Bartoli and fifth seed McHale.

Both players are in good form, and have been two of the WTA’s top performers throughout the year.

Bartoli was almost eliminated in her second round opener this week, despite having built a 6-4 3-0 lead against Vania King. The American went on to win 11 of the next 15 games, and built a 4-2 lead of her own in the third. Staring defeat in the face, Bartoli rediscovered her A-game and managed to clinch a dramatic 6-4 5-7 6-4 victory.

McHale didn’t have everything her own way in round two either. She needed to save 16 of 19 break points on her way to a 4-6 6-4 6-4 win over Misaki Doi.

It’s not easy to know what to expect for today’s contest. McHale secured a shock two set (7-6 6-2) win over Bartoli in last year’s US Open, but Bartoli was able to avenge this loss with a 6-2 6-1 thrashing of the American in Beijing.

Prediction: Bartoli in three.
