Jelena Jankovic takes on Shahar Peer this afternoon in the second round of the WTA Doha Open.Jankovic is the eighth seed in Doha this week and knows that good run will keep her in touch with the top ten. The former world No. 1 is one of the most capable players on the WTA tour, and she could realistically be in with a chance of challenging for the title in Qatar.
She’ll begin with a second round showdown against Shahar Peer of Israel, who wasn’t handed a bye in round one, though she may as well have been. Having been pitted against Moroccan wildcard entrant Nadia Lalami, she got straight to work and wrapped up what will surely be one of the quickest matches of her career.
Lalami couldn’t even come close to matching Peer, who left the court with a 6-0 6-0 win.
Peer will quickly find that her second round matchup will require a lot more effort. Still, her performance against Lalami shouldn’t be ignored. Peer dominated throughout and showed a real cutting edge when closing out points. Jankovic is going to be considered the favourite here regardless, but the Serb may have to be at her best to get the job done.
Prediction: Jankovic in three.
