Anabel Medina Garrigues takes on Varvara Lepchenko this afternoon for a place in the quarter-finals of the 2012 Mutua Madrid Open (15:00 BST start).

Medina Garrigues has played some good tennis this week in Madrid. She began her  Mutua Madrid Open campaign with a straightforward 6-0 6-2 thrashing of Tsvetana Pirokova, but had to work a lot harder on Tuesday to get past Sorana Cirstea.

The third set nearly went all the way to a tie-breaker, but the Spaniard edged to a 6-1 3-6 7-5 victory.

Next up is American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko, who defied the odds in round one to get past former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in three sets (6-4 6-7 6-3), then backed up that result up with a 7-6 6-4 dismissal of Israel’s Shahar Peer.

Medina Garrigues will enter this contest with a 1-0 head-to-head record against Lepchenko, having beaten her 6-1 2-6 6-2 in the 2007 French Open.

The majority of fans in the Magic Box will be hoping, and perhaps even anticipating, that Medina Garrigues will come good again of Thursday. She certainly appears to be the favourite.

Prediction: Medina Garrigues in two.
