Serena Williams was challenged in the first set but after that it was smooth sailing for the world number 1 as she defeated the perviously unheralded Petra Kvitova.
Serena’s 7-6, 6-2 win means she now has a chance to win a fourth Wimbledon title which would put her one behind sister Venus who has collected five crowns at SW19.
Kvitova has been one of the surprise packages of the fortnight and she took the defending champion by surprise early on, using her accurate leftie serve and swinging forehand to good effect to take a 4-2 first set lead.
However she never quite looked like pulling off what would have been the upset of the tournament.
Serena took advantage of a sloppy game from the young Czech to level at 4-4 and took a stranglehold in the tiebreak, racing to a 4-0 lead. However Kvitova kept fighting and pulled one of the minibreaks back but Serena’s powerful serving came good to claim the tiebreak 7-5.
From there onwards Kvitova’s game just slipped a notch with the forehand becoming a little wayward and it was enough for Serena to get the early break in the second set and ease her way into the final.
